SEK is proud to welcome Barrett Rice as our newest partner! Barrett brings two decades of courtroom experience to her defense-litigation practice, specializing in maritime, offshore, oil & gas, transportation, and complex casualty matters. She represents vessel owners and operators, energy companies, contractors, domestic and foreign insurers, and other stakeholders in high-stakes incidents across the Southeast and beyond.
Her background includes a Certificate in Maritime Law from Tulane University Law School in 2005, where she graduated magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, and Order of the Barristers. Barrett began her career at a major New Orleans defense firm, securing trial victories in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and internationally (including France, England and Norway).
At SEK, Barrett will defend clients by drawing from her trial-tested skills and experience in evidentiary strategy, maritime regulation (including the Jones Act and general maritime law), ship salvage, towage liability, oil-field casualty defense, and complex transportation litigation. Because she has also served on the plaintiff side, she understands the anatomy of liability claims from both sides—giving her clients a strategic advantage in managing risk, countering exposure, and resolving disputes efficiently.
She is admitted in Louisiana state courts and the following federal courts: U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana and the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Barrett holds memberships with the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute and the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association. She is also recognized as a Super Lawyer and listed in The Best Lawyers in America (Litigation-Insurance).
Welcome to SEK, Barrett!
