Hobbies and Interests
Outside of the office, Barrett enjoys practicing yoga and is a certified yoga instructor. A former actress, she remains passionate about theater, film, and the visual arts. A dedicated New Orleans Saints fan, Barrett also spends much of her free time supporting her three children in their various athletic pursuits—most often from the sidelines of a sports field or in a gym somewhere in the New Orleans area.
Barrett Rice brings two decades of courtroom experience to her defense-litigation practice, specializing in maritime, offshore, oil & gas, transportation, and complex casualty matters. She represents vessel owners and operators, energy companies, contractors, insurers, and other stakeholders in high-stakes incidents across the Gulf Coast and beyond.
Her background includes a Certificate in Maritime Law from Tulane University Law School in 2005, where she graduated Magna cum Laude, Order of the Coif and Order of the Barristers. Barrett began her career at a major New Orleans defense firm, securing trial victories in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and internationally (including France, England and Norway).
At Staines, Eppling & Kenney Barrett leverages her trial-tested skills in evidentiary strategy, maritime regulation (including the Jones Act and general maritime law), ship-salvage and towage liability, oil-field casualty defense, and complex transportation litigation. Because she has served on the plaintiff side, she understands the anatomy of liability claims from the inside—giving her clients a strategic advantage in managing risk, countering exposure, and resolving disputes efficiently.
She is admitted in Louisiana state courts and the following federal courts: U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana and the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Barrett holds memberships with the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute and the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association. She is also recognized as a Super Lawyer and listed in The Best Lawyers in America (Litigation-Insurance).
Barrett’s approach is grounded in collaboration with in-house counsel and insurers, aligning defense strategy with commercial objectives, preserving assets and reputation, and obtaining favorable outcomes while controlling cost and disruption. She is admitted to practice and regularly defends complex matters throughout Louisiana and the Gulf South region.
